While
the properties of macroscopic systems at thermodynamic equilibrium
are accurately predicted in terms of their atomic constituents by Statistical Mechanics,
a complete (satisfactory) description of systems with many degrees of freedom under non equilibrium conditions is still missing.
Progress can be made by combining concepts and techniques developed in the framework of dynamical systems with statistical approaches.
The 60th birthday of
Angelo Vulpiani, who steadily worked on the frontier among
these two different disciplines, provides the opportunity to illustrate
the state of the art, different perspectives and viewpoints in this field.
