Non-local rheology in granular material

Using discrete numerical simulations of soft and rigid particles, we investigate the dynamical mechanisms controlling dissipation and non-locality of the rheology. We show that a gradient expansion of the rheology allows one to get quantitative agreemenet with observations. We furthermore show that, contrarily to soft particles, rigid particles do not present any localized plastic event: their dynamics is controlled by floppy modes. The dynamical transition between the two behaviours will be discussed and characterised.
